Unfortunately, to survive many artists must depend on collectors,
galleries and museums to buy and exhibit their work, and cultural
institutions need the financial support of patrons and donors of art to
keep their doors open and build permanent collections. Wealthy individuals, families and institutions operating within a well-defined patronage system have been at the center of some of the greatest achievements in art, architecture, science and medicine from the early Middle Ages to the present day. Various Popes, the de Medici family, kings, princes, industrialists like Carnegie, Mellon and Rockefeller, the church and governments have all supported artists and scientists in their efforts to invent, create and advance our knowledge about ourselves and the earth and the cosmos in which we live. During the sixteenth century the patronage system was based on a reciprocal relationship between a patron and a client for the mutual benefit of both, shaped by social concepts of reciprocity, gift exchange, service and loyalty. Actually, the system works much the same way today. Wealthy individuals, families and corporations support charitable and non-profit events and organizations receiving in return tax receipts and elevated social status helping to create a benevolent public image. Institutions apply for grants and receive funds in exchange for promoting the granting agency and the government division or political party that underwrites and sponsors the program. Like all cultural institutions, the University Museum needs patrons to support its programs and maintain its permanent collection. Beginning with this issue of INsight, we are launching a fund-raising campaign to attract individual patrons to financially support specific exhibits during the upcoming year (2001) at the University Museum. We appreciate your support. Richard Henning Field, Ph.D. Director, University Museum & Kipp Gallery |
