The Department of Music at IUP is heralded to be among the best music programs in the country. In celebration of that recognized excellence, it is only logical for IUP to “take the stage” in one of the finest performance halls in the country, Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall.
"IUP Plays Pittsburgh," emcee'd by Ted Sohier, will be a musical extravaganza designed to showcase the many varied talents of IUP’s faculty and students. With the department having over twenty outstanding ensembles, this two-hour Heinz Hall event will feature performances by the IUP Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, Chorale, Jazz Ensemble, Opera Theatre, and Marching Band.
A dessert reception, hosted by the IUP President Tony Atwater and Dr. Beverly Roberts-Atwater, will be held in the lobby of Heinz Hall for all concert ticket holders and will start at 6:45 p.m. |
Alumni Reception
There will be a special reception for alumni prior to the concert. You can make a reservation for the reception and purchase your concert tickets by calling the Office of Alumni Affairs at (724) 357-7042 or (800) YES-2IUP or by visiting the alumni website. |

Your Master of Ceremonies: Ted Sohier
WQED-FM
A career broadcaster, Ted was born in the hometown of Emerson, Thoreau, and the Alcotts—Concord, Massachusetts. After a stint in the Army during the Vietnam War, he graduated from Temple University, Philadelphia, with a degree in communication.
Ted has worked in radio and television in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, having moved to western Pennsylvania in the late 1970s. A semi-professional musician much of his life, Ted has played in rock 'n roll, country, and bluegrass bands, most recently the Dog Run Boys and Second Wind. He is currently a member of the Pittsburgh honky-tonk band, The Mavens. But, his classical music roots come from home where his mother, a music major at Eastman, played piano and harpsichord. It was classical music on the radio (Philadelphia's WFLN) that provided the soundtrack to Ted's childhood home.
Ted is on the boards of Chatham Baroque and the Guitar Society of Fine Art. He is also on the Honorary Board of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, and is a member of its operating committee. A former Sports Car Club of America road-racer, Ted continues his involvement with motorsports. He's been the "Voice of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix" since its inception in 1983. Ted also enjoys motorcycling, bicycling, the outdoors, and nature.
