Dr. Sarah Mantel is Professor of Music and Director of Opera/Music Theater at IUP. A mezzo-soprano, she holds the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in vocal performance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is a frequent performer and champion of contemporary music. Dr. Mantel is a founder and co-director of the Festival of Women Composers, which, since its inception in 1990, has become a highly respected symposium, with scholarly and artistic participation on a national and international level. She is the recipient of grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Meet-the-Composers, and the National Endowment for the Arts to sponsor performances and commissions of the works of women composers. As the Director of Opera/Music Theatre at IUP, Dr. Mantel has directed over two dozen mainstage productions, including such diverse genres as The Magic Flute, The Pirates of Penzance, Die Fledermaus, West Side Story, and Amahl and the Night Visitors. Previous to joining the IUP faculty in 1986, Dr. Mantel held academic positions at Montana State University, Chicago State University, and Northern Illinois University. She is active professionally in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the National Opera Association, and Opera for Youth.
