After graduating with a degree in choral music education from Drake University, he earned the M.M. in piano performance as well as the M.A. and Ph.D. in musicology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining the faculty at IUP, he taught music history at Middle Tennessee State University and was the managing editor of The Instrumentalist.
