David Ferguson is a native of Illinois, having received a B.M. in Music Education with Jazz Emphasis from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, an M.M.E. and an Ed.D. in Music Education from the University of Illinois. Before joining the IUP faculty, Dr. Ferguson was Director of Bands at Stephen Decatur High School in Decatur Illinois where he taught Marching, Symphonic, Concert, Pep Band, and Jazz Bands for 6 years.

At IUP, David teaches applied trumpet, the IUP trumpet ensemble, Music for Elementary Majors, Student Teacher Observation, Intro to Music, Fundamentals of Music Theory (online), and graduate-level music education courses as needed. Dr. Ferguson has presented at several state and regional music educators conferences across the country. Articles under his authorship have been published in the Illinois Music Educator, The Instrumentalist, School Band and Orchestra, Update: Applications for Research in Music Education, and the National Band Association Journal. He is also listed as a contributing author in the MENC publication, Strategies for Teaching: Technology, and his original compositions for brass have been published by Eighth Note Publications. The IUP Trumpet Ensemble under his direction performed at the 2009 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Harrisburg, PA. Dr. Ferguson has conducted the mass trumpet ensemble for the National Trumpet Competition for the past several years, where IUP groups and soloists regularly are selected as semi-finalists.

Dr. Ferguson remains active as a performer, playing trumpet with the "Hoodlebug Brass"- the faculty brass quintet in residence at IUP- as well as with several regional orchestras and jazz ensembles. In addition to his IUP duties, Dr. Ferguson is a member of the Indiana Area School Board. His wife, Laura, is also a distinguished music educator and IUP professor, and they have two children: Ella, and Xavier.
