IUP Trombone Studio
Spring 2008

Incoming freshmen and transfer students

Here you will find some basic information that will be helpful as you prepare for your first semester at IUP.

  • Contact information- Dr. Dickinson can be reached via email or telephone as listed below,

Christian Dickinson

Office:  316 Cogswell

Phone:  724-357-6998

Email:  cmdkson@iup.edu

  • Advising- Dr. Dickinson will be your advisor for all classes and for the remainder of your music degree program once the fall semester has begun.  Regular advising sessions will be posted outside his door.
  • Syllabi- The private trombone and trombone choir (brass ensemble) syllabi are posted on a link from the IUP Trombone Studio web page.  Make sure you read them carefully and understand the requirements of each.
  • Equipment- all trombone students are expected to have a good quality instrument and mouthpiece in good working order.  You might be asked to try new mouthpieces or to invest in a different instrument.  Also, the following items will be needed for your lessons and ensemble concerts:

Metal straight mute (Tom Crown or Jo-Ral)

Metal or fiber cup mute (Jo-Ral or Denis Wick)

Metronome

Tuner

I prefer the Korg credit card size metronome and tuner because they are portable, inexpensive, are easily read and can be heard above the trombone sound.  You also might want to invest in a small zipper bag for your mutes, as you will probably be collecting more throughout your time at IUP.

The ensemble concert dress for all performing ensembles is a tuxedo for men and black for women.  You may bring a tuxedo (or solid black suit) with you, or you may order a tux through our choral director.

Information for all trombone majors

Auditions for concert ensembles will be August 30th, from 1pm to 3pm.  Jazz ensemble auditions are posted separately- information and music can be found at Dr. Kevin Eisensmith's room (315).  Audition material can be found and printed from Dr. Dickinson's web page.  Follow all markings and tempi for each excerpt.  Sight-reading will also be a part of the audition.

A scheduling meeting will be held on August 30th at 3:15pm in room 128.  This will be for the purpose of scheduling private lessons for the fall semester.  Each student will need to schedule a 45-minute lesson, and at a time that will accommodate both teacher and student each week.  If possible, give yourself 15 minutes of warm up time before your lesson.

All trombone majors are required to participate in the Trombone Choir (MUSC 120, section 003), which acts as a lab for trombone lessons as well as a studio/master class.  You may take this course for 1 credit or for zero credit, and it may serve as your small ensemble requirement for the semester.

Fall semester, 2008 ensemble auditions

Trombone auditions for concert ensembles will be held on Thursday, August 28th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm in 128 Cogswell.  There will be a sign-up sheet outside Dr. Dickinson's door (316 Cogswell) with open times.  Please see Dr. Dickinson if there is a class conflict with the audition times.

The audition will be in three parts:

1.      A prepared piece of your choice, not to exceed one minute in length.  The piece should show the best of your abilities.

2.     The required piece for either bass or tenor trombone, is found below.  You are to prepare the entire etude, using the 2nd ending for the tenor trombone etude.

3.     Sightreading.

You will be auditioning for the following concert ensembles:

  • Wind Ensemble
  • Symphony Band
  • Concert Band

Music majors are required to be in at least one large concert ensemble and one small ensemble.  The audition is for placement in one of the above listed ensembles, and some changes in student schedules might be necessary.

Audition material can be downloaded and printed from the links below.
