Irvin Kauffman began his musical training at the age of 12 with the violin, and four months later began study of the cello. He studied cello with Luigi Silva at the Norfolk Summer School of Yale University School of Music, privately in New York City and at the Peabody Conservatory, as well as with Leonard Rose and Alfred Wallenstein.
In a career spanning over five decades, Irvin Kauffman has performed as soloist with the Pittsburgh Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Wheeling Symphony and the Virginia Beach Pops, as well as in recital throughout the eastern seaboard. In addition, he has made many radio and television appearances including performances on WQXR-FM's Artists-in-Concert and the prestigious Gulbenkian Series at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Kauffman was instrumental in the development and founding instructor of the guitar departments of several western Pennsylvania colleges and universities, including Carlow College, Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham College, Community College of Allegheny County, University of Pittsburgh and the Dana School of Music of Youngstown University. In 1977 he was appointed to the faculty of Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he holds the chair of Associate Professor of Guitar.
In addition to guitar, Mr. Kauffman plays the cello, bass, mandolin and banjo, as well as the flute, piccolo and tuba. He also composes film scores; one of the films for which he wrote -- Coming Home, a docudrama from WQED -- won a Golden Eagle Award from C.I.N.E
Irvin Kauffman devotes much of his time to composition and record producing. He currently works with a "heavy metal blues" band named Raging Through and Through; their new CD, 5:17, can be found on Mr. Kauffman's record company's web site: www.sgwheat.com
