Carl Rahkonen holds a B.A. degree in music and psychology from Weber State College in Utah and an M.M. degree in musicology from the University of Utah. From Indiana University in Bloomington he received his M.L.S. degree with a specialization in music librarianship and a Ph.D. in folklore and ethnomusicology. He plays fiddle and a wide variety of other instruments with various groups, most significantly the Irish band, Aran, from Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Dr. Rahkonen recently spent a year researching American fiddling including Scandinavian, Scottish, Irish, and Old Time styles, primarily in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
