Frequently
Asked Questions
What
Is ArtsPath?
ArtsPath is a regional arts-in-education program in partnership
with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and is one of eight
throughout the state funded by the PCA. ArtsPath, in alliance
with the Indiana Arts Council, services a five-county region
including Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Indiana, and Jefferson counties.
The work involves identifying high-quality, professionally active
visual, performing, media, and literary artists. Through schools
and community groups, the Partnership works to place these artists
and other state directory artists in educational settings for
extended, in-depth residency activities. Further work of the
Partnership includes arts-in-education advocacy both regionally
and statewide, providing artist and teacher personal educational
opportunities, community outreach, and the like. Administered
through the IUP College of Fine Arts, the program is directed
through a consortium of regional concerns including ARIN Intermediate
Unit 28, Associated Artists of Butler County, Indiana Arts Council,
and the IUP College of Education and Education Technology along
with a host of regional educators, education administrators,
and community leaders serving on an advisory committee.

What
Is an Artist Residency?
Artist residencies presented through ArtsPath are a minimum
of ten days to a maximum of 180 days for individual directory
artists and a minimum of five days for directory companies and
ensembles. The average individual artist residency is ten to
fifteen days. Artists work in educational environments to create
projects with up to three core groups with a maximum of thirty
students per group. Artists are also asked to participate through
in-service training and community outreach. Residencies may
be hosted by any group wishing to use the Arts as an educational
tool including schools, senior centers, day care centers, health
care facilities, businesses, and civic organizations.

How
Is a Residency Initiated?
The residency may be initiated by a teacher, a community organization,
the directory artist, or other party. Once a plan is developed
in full collaboration between the host and artist, the host
site may apply to ArtsPath for funding that will support up
to 50% of the artist fees. Applications will be available each
year by February 1 with an initial deadline of May 1. Applications
will be accepted after this deadline if funding remains available.

What
Are the Costs?
The total cost of a ten-day residency, including at least one
day for planning and evaluation, will be approximately $2,000
in artist fees and $1,000 in administrative fees. The host site,
through its own budget, district budget, PTA/PTG/PTO, booster
organization, or private contributions will be responsible for
only about $1,000 (50% of the artist fees) with ArtsPath covering
the remainder of the expenses, including the administrative
costs. The total expense will vary depending on the plan developed.
The host site and artist will be responsible for determining
and acquiring any needed supplies and equipment.

Who
Are the Artists?
Each artist is selected through a rigorous application process
administered through ArtsPath. Selected artists must meet specific
criteria including demonstration of artistic excellence and
ability to communicate their art form in a classroom setting.
Applicants present a portfolio and are interviewed by a panel
of arts experts approved by the state and then observed in a
classroom setting. Information on artists recommended by the
panel is then sent to the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts for
final review and recommendation. In addition to artists recommended
by ArtsPath, all artists placed on the Pennsylvania Directory
of AIE Artists either by the state or other AIE partners are
eligible to present residencies in the region covered by ArtsPath.
All artists hold appropriate clearances for working in a classroom.

What
Constitutes a "Model" Residency?
- The
residency design must give students an in-depth experience
in the artists discipline.
- Students
are to have direct one-on-one interaction with the artist.
- We
encourage the residency plan to include connecting the art
form to subjects such as history, math, and science along
with other curriculum and arts disciplines.
- Teachers
are key to the success of the residency being a full partner
with the artist; and the host teacher is always present,
working as a team with the artist.
- In
the evaluation process during and following the residency,
concrete ideas are generated so that the teacher is able
to utilize residency activities in future lesson plans.
- While
in residence, the artist is available to work with other
teachers and students to some extent to expose the entire
host site population to their art form.

Must
a Residency Be Ten Days?
At least ten days but it can certianly be longer. One of the
overriding standards of this program is to afford students a
quality arts experience over time. Therefore, to qualify for
ArtsPath matching funds, artist residencies must be a minimum
of ten days. Although they do not have to be consecutive, they
should be in a fairly tight concentration of time. They must
also concentrate on the same students throughout those ten days.
Without this, the students do not gain an experience that goes
beyond the regular classroom.

Who
Can Apply for a Residency?
This program is open to all community entities in our region
who want to utilize the arts to teach. In addition to schools,
resident artists can be placed in community centers, senior
citizen facilities, businesses, health care institutions,
correctional facilities, and the like.

Can
I Apply for More than One Residency Each Year?
You can apply for more than one residency! As long as your applications
are complete and your organization supports your efforts with matching
funds, there is no limit to how many applications may be submitted
by one teacher, one school, one organization, or one district.
The only restrictions will be an adherence to the criteria of
the program and available state funding.

What
if I am an Itinerant Teacher?
This program
is for ALL disciplines. If you are an itinerant teacher and
only meet your students once or twice a week, combine your
efforts with other teachers in the school. Work together to
